Si vis pacem, para bellum

(If you want peace, prepare for war)

-Plato, Nomoi(Laws)

Of the 11000 years that humankind has lived, in organized settlements with boundaries, only about 300 have been spent in peace and tranquility.

In the remaining 10700 years men have fought each other to the death in wars that have seen rape, slave labor and pillage.

Some wars, like the Trojan Wars or the Crusades or even the Napoleonic Wars are alive in our collective memories, as are the memories of the two World Wars of the 20th Century.

But there have also been other skirmishes and battles, brief flash-points that made the world hold it’s breath for a week or a month, even some that brought whole swathes of the world to the brink of annihilation. There have been coups that shaped history and brought us to where we are today. None of these conflicts and coups find any significant mention and have been by and large forgotten.
